Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, TARRAN (Battle Of the Folk Bands Winners 2023) are a spellbinding contemporary pioneering trad four-piece who have taken the Traditional Music scene by storm. They are a concoction of fast-paced Harp, foot-stomping Fiddle, melodic and accompanying Piano, modern tonal Bodhrán and attacking Whistle. Quickly becoming recognised for their up-beat, blistering, jazzy modus operandi, TARRAN’s virtuosity leads the way in the fusion of both Scottish and Irish musical influences. The band produce a unique and infectious sound which is underpinned by their own inspiring compositions.
Formed in 2018, Breanna Wilson and Sophie Joint are a contemporary folk fiddle and piano duo based in Glasgow. They have performed at venues all over Europe for a broad range of audiences and are passionate about delivering an exciting and engaging programme of music.
Through studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, they have developed an understanding of the importance of music that intertwines with history, community and place. They voice this understanding through their music, as their compositions and arrangements are interwoven with engaging stories of the people and places in Scotland that inspire them. They gained recognition in 2019 when they received the Molloy Award at Birmingham TradFest.
The unique and varied seascapes of Scotland are the inspiration for Sophie’s first solo album, ‘Light on Water’. From storms stirring up the sea at Port Appin on the west coast to the spectacular sunset skies of Stornoway in the Western Isles, Sophie’s compositions take you on an unforgettable musical journey which includes the single, ‘Apricity’. Sophie thought this unusual term for sudden warmth of the sun in winter summed up the culmination of her musical exploration around Scotland, which ended at an Edinburgh harbour with shafts of brilliant sunlight transforming an urban landscape on one of the coldest days of the year.
